OLD ORCHARD ROAD RESIDENCE

BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA

Perched on a challenging hillside site filled with untapped potential, our work was fueled by the imaginative vision of our client – - a luminary in the world of television sitcoms and blockbuster films. Drawing upon the essence of cinematography, our design unfolded with elements of tension, drama, motion, and the [picture] frame reminiscent of the cinematic experience.

We carefully preserved parts of the existing home, including  its  coveted  wood-burning  fireplace, garage, swimming pool, and the north wall set against the dramatic hillside scenery. These elements anchored our design and guided its development and growth. We aimed to transform the building into a conduit for engaging with the natural environment and meticulously curated each space to highlight and integrate the external beauty while interweaving it with the home’s cinematic-inspired narrative.

The approach to the home is marked by tension. Two striking volumes are held in proximity, creating an inviting void that leads guests to the interior. The entry hall bathes in natural light and welcomes all who enter.

Drama is articulated through bold cantilevers and opposing  overhangs  that  traverse  the  carport and leap toward the site’s distinct features: the landscaped hillside, vibrant canyon greenery, a welcoming rear yard pool, and Pacific Ocean views. A standout is the screening room, which is conceived as a distinct, elevated space reachable only via a bridge that confidently crosses the water feature, offering an unmatched cinematic ambiance.

The concept of motion is brought to life through a meandering water feature that starts at the entrance, wraps around the living room’s prominent corner, and cascades down a textured wall into a serene basin. This feature enchants those arriving at the property.

Enhancing the visual experience, architectural forms and ornamental frames are thoughtfully placed to capture and highlight views of the ocean, canyon, and lush surroundings, mirroring the careful composition of a cinematic shot.

The Frame House is more than an architectural creation; it is a vibrant homage to the blend of creativity, the natural world, and cinematic wonder.
